Why we Breed What we Breed

I have been breeding dogs for over 25 years and I have listened to people tell me what they like and what they don’t like, as far as dog breeds go.  I decided to write about this since I am asked about this so much, when people are trying to figure out which breed to get for their families.

This little Buttercup is in a new home, sorry.

I cringe when someone tells me that they had to get rid of their “xxx,” because it was too wild, biting their children, or could not be potty trained, etc… I always think, well of course you shouldn’t have gotten that breed if you have kids, or allergies, or whatever else the case may be.  I am so shocked, over and over again, by breeders who lie to people, just to sell a puppy!!!

They sell a Pomeranian to a family who has allergies, oh my gosh!!  That is one of the most highly shedding breeds out there!  A high percentage of people tell me they had to get rid of their Pomeranian because of it’s shedding and the family has allergies.  When I ask them if the breeder knew they had allergies and needed a non shedding dog, the answer is always yes.

For my breeding program, I have a certain criteria that has to be met before I will consider breeding a certain breed.  Obviously, the breeds I do offer have met that criteria.

A perfect dog has to be non shedding and hypoallergenic, good with kids, always good with kids, not just when the dog is in the mood.  A child should be able to go up to a dog at any time, pet it or even pull it’s tail, it’s happened, and the dog should tolerate this!

The dog should be trained easily and I am talking within 1-2 weeks and a dog should not bark too much!!  Of course immunizations cause many of these negative traits.

A puppy, should never ever bite anyone in the face.  Surprisingly enough, this is the one negative trait I hear the most often about!  I hate to hear this too because it is usually a child who has been bitten!

There are two breeds I hear about the most often. The first is the Yorkie. Cute, yes, even adorable!  If you have one, you may be able to guess what I am going to say next about them, hard to train and yippy.  EVERYONE, pretty much says this!  I did breed them for a very short time.

The second breed is the Cocker Spaniel.  I LOVE this breed but hate all the fur that seems to just fall off their bodies!  Many people have had this breed and have raved about how good it is with kids, but they do not get a second one because of the horrible shedding!

Did you know the English Maltipoos that I breed have 1/4 Cocker in them? This is why everyone loves them so much, it is the Cocker Spaniel in them!  These are considered non shedding though since the puppies are made up of 3/4 non shedding breeds.  The puppies are 1/2 Maltese, 1/4 Poodle and 1/4 Cocker Spaniel.  The English Maltipoo may very well be my favorite breed.

The following breeds, I do not like because they do not meet my criteria. MANY of the breeds on this list are horrible with children and like to bite!! Please do not be insulted if you see your dog on this list.  If a dog is on this list, it obviously does not mean every one of these breeds is not good.  9 times out of 10 though, I have heard negative things or experienced them myself because I have bred them.

Again though, with the Yorkie, it is almost every single person who has had one that has said they are yippy and hard to train.  Yes, they are on my “naughty” list!

By the way, sometimes an older or retired person, likes to tell me they do not have children at home anymore and do not care if a dog is good with children or not.  But don’t you want a dog with a good disposition?  Do you really want your dog to bite the mailman?  A dog should just be happy!

These are the breeds I hear negative things about, quite often:  Yorkies, Shih Tzus, Pekingese, Lhasa Apsos and any Terrier.  Also the Mi-Ki’s (there is a whole story to go with this one), Pomeranians, Papillon and the Schnauzer.

These breeds, the Shih Tzu, Pekingese, Lhasa Apso, I have heard from many people who have owned them, that they are not good with children.

These breeds, I have heard, are nippy, the Shih Tzu, Pekingese, Pomeranian and Lhasa Apso.

The rest, I have heard are either high strung or are hard to train.  Some of the individual breeds listed above, also fall into other categories. Then of course, you have the ones who shed.

If I can go on here?  Again, I get phone calls from people who have 3 or 4 kids and they want a nice little family dog.  Then, they tell me they are considering the Lhasa Apso.  Not a good idea, they are nippy!!  Or after talking to them, I discover they have severe allergies and they are looking for a Pomeranian!!

Please think carefully about the breed before you purchase.
