Trimming Nails
Many breeds have an extra nail called a dew claw. It grows above the
rest of the nails kind of in the "wrist" area. (I really need to learn
dog anatomy)!
Some breeders get these removed, I used to do this also. You would
take your litter to the vet at no older than 2 days old. They would
just pull the nail out! It doesn't hurt them I was told. Oh, okay!
I used to follow blindly along, doing whatever people said I was
supposed to do, thus the dew claw removal. One day I was at the vet
watching him do this procedure, and I looked at him and said, "why
are we doing this?" He said, "no reason." How true that really was.
That's when he told me it was basically just because people forget to
trim the nail! The nail can grow in a circle around the paw and right
through. Ouch!
I think it is more humane to NOT put a little puppy through this and
we be responsible enough to remember to clip this nail.
Dogs need their nails trimmed about once a month. Every dog is different. You can do it
yourself or take your dog to a groomer or to the vets. We do it ourselves.
It is very easy if your dog doesn't wiggle too much. If you have the "wiggly" kind, have
someone help you. The more often you do it the quicker your dog will get used to it and
allow you do this.
It is very important to trim nails because if you don't, his nails will get too long and push
on the floor when he walks. This will make his feet sore. Plus his vein will grow longer in
the nail and the trimming will be much more difficult.
All you need is a pair of dog nail trimmers. The kind we find easiest to use is pictured
below. Replace them at least once a year because they will get dull. Please look at the
picture below to see how it is done. When you trim make sure you don't cut the vein or it
may bleed. You can dip your dogs nail in cornstarch if it does bleed. If your dog has dark
nails it is very difficult to see the vein, so just trim them a little longer than you think you
should and cut them more often. Make sure you are working in good light; even outside,
weather permitting.
We'd be happy to show you how to do this when you pick up your puppy!
